Get out your pen, get out your paper and be ready to learn Every single episode. You're going to be able to take something away that you can implement. Are you ready? Let's get to work. Well, hey there. Welcome back to the People Gardener Podcast. Happy to have you here. This week we're going to dig into self-awareness. One of the best places to start transforming your team is really taking a good look at yourself. The question is in the past, have you been looking at yourself with rose-colored glasses? Are you looking at yourself under a microscope? Are you whitewashing the things that are uncomfortable and you really need to work on, or are you really digging in and getting a good understanding of how you can grow personally, so that you can show your team the difference it makes when they work at growing themselves. When you show them how to do this, it's so much easier for them to do it, and by showing them, you give them the opportunity to become the raving fans. The first thing is your core values you personally and also the company. Start there. Look at whether or not you are in alignment with those. By the words that you speak, by your behavior, how you go about interacting with your team, they understand what the core values are. Company core values are going to align with how you behave, how you think, what you believe, what your interaction is and how you respond to them. Self-awareness there's a reason why I'm really encouraging you to do it because in what? About 11 days? The Best Boss Ever challenge, ever challenge, five-day challenge comes out, and getting a really good look at yourself will help you so much in this challenge to be able to implement the different things each day. So, yeah, we're starting now, even though the challenge starts on the 14th of October. We're starting now.

Speaker 1:

Don't shy away from the magnifying glass. It's really healthy. Don't think of it as a negative. Just think of it as information that's coming in. Okay, this is how I operated in this particular scenario, and you know what I think I could have done better. It could be that you're taking stock and you're really getting clear on emotions that are easy for you to manage. Take note of the ones that aren't. Figure out, okay. So how can I work on those? What are the scenarios that I could put myself in that would help me to grow my muscle when it comes to managing those emotions?

Speaker 1:

Look at your behaviors over the last I mean, take the last week, take the last month. What are your behaviors saying to your team about you? Are you aware of how you're interacting and how you're behaving and how that's being received? You need to know these things.

Speaker 1:

Let's look at this particular exercise that I'm inviting you to participate in as a scientific experiment. You're collecting data. That is all that you're doing. I don't want judgment. I don't want you to feel bad. I don't want you to feel negative. All I want you to do is gather the facts is gather the facts.

Speaker 1:

Gather the data that will help you identify places that you can grow. That will help you identify ways that you can change your thinking, your process, how you interact in a positive way by you taking on this challenge. What it's doing is showing your team that, hey, the boss can change, the boss can grow, the boss values growing values, learning new things. And then they start to acknowledge that, hey, you know what I could probably grow here and I could grow there. I could learn how to better communicate or to be more articulate the ones that really have a hard time expressing themselves. I can learn how to do a better job of that. So you're creating this environment where everybody is focused on becoming better at different skills. They want to improve because what they're feeling is support and what they're feeling is excitement for the other people that are growing too, and they're just super enthused because so many things are falling into place, because everybody's collaborating, they're working in the same direction and they're all growing together.

Speaker 1:

Does that mean there's not going to be any aches and pains? No, does that mean that there's not going to be days where you fail and everybody else falls flat on their face in a skill that they would really thought they'd mastered and it turns out they hadn't. That's just part of the human conditions being honest with yourself about where you really are in your skill and ability in all areas of your life within your work environment is where it all starts. That is the spot where you start transforming your team, where you start creating opportunity for raving fans to emerge. That's where your freedom really starts. That's where your increased profit really starts by you showing up and being completely honest, being willing to ask the questions of your team and how they receive you, how they see you.

Speaker 1:

You got to get to that place where you I'm just going to do it, I'm just going to ask, I'm going to have this conversation and help them understand. I really need to learn, because I can't change anything if I don't know that I'm doing it right. I know for myself. One of the challenges for me is I'm impatient and I'm also. My thinking is the fastest way from point A to point B. So when I used to interact with someone who had the two or three or five minute preamble before they got to their point or to the question, that was so hard and early on, I just cut them off. I said, whoa, I don't have time for this. What is the problem? What is it that you need me to do for you? And what that did is it just shut them down?

Speaker 1:

So get comfortable in your own skin, asking people to share with you, to give you feedback, to help you become more self-aware, because self-awareness is so, so important. I'd really encourage you to check in with some of your friends, whether they're in the company or outside the company. It could be if you're on a sports team, okay. So how do people receive you? How do they interact with you in that environment? Get those people to give you you know three or four.

Speaker 1:

What are my strengths, what are my weaknesses when you think about me. Get those people to give you you know three or four. What are my strengths, what are my weaknesses. When you think about me, what are the things that come to mind? The more information you can get from a diverse group of people, you'll start to see common threads come up. Those are your competencies. Those are the things that are just kind of innately in you. They may be good, they may be not so good. They might be helpful, they might not be helpful, but you need.

Speaker 1:

The beauty is what you see doesn't have to stay the way it is. You, as a human, have the ability to grow, to move forward. Go back under the microscope and you see something completely different. You have the power to do that. You have an incredible amount of power to change yourself if, in fact, you want to. That's the bottom line. If you want to get the raving fans, start with yourself, be aware of yourself.

Speaker 1:

And I'm really excited about this challenge coming up. I'm putting the last bits and pieces together, but I'll put a registration link in the show notes. This challenge every day you're going to be working on behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, interactions with people. That will help you to exercise a new self-awareness and a new skill. It probably won't be written in stone and totally taken five days, but it's something that you can work on, something that you can look back on and know hey, I can change, I can be self-aware and I can put my best foot forward. I just have to choose to do that. I'm going to put the checklist in the show notes the self-awareness checklist and I'll put the checklist in the show notes the self-awareness checklist and I'll put the challenge in the show notes as well. So click on those links. Have fun with this. Remember no judgment, just facts Like observe yourself from the 35,000 foot view and just start writing down and keeping a list of what you're seeing. Be okay with what you're seeing, knowing that you absolutely can change it. That's it for this week. We'll talk to you again next week.
